Food Truck Tuesday
Today turned out to be a big day.
My employer arranged for a food truck to come to the corporate office today. So I made the effort to drive in and work in the office.
I had two initiatives:
One, food truck (obviously), and
Two, see what it was like to work with only my laptop and no other accessories
See, if I could effectively work with just the laptop, then a plethora of work space options would be open to me. I wouldn't be confined to the "hotel" cubicle provided at the office or to my home work space; I could work just about anywhere I want to, like the library or the cozy coffee shop up the street.
I know. Just about everyone else who's working remotely has been doing this for at least two years.
I know. I'm slow on the uptake.
I know. I'm slow on the uptake.
But the laptop was a sticking point. It's small, and I haven't had to work on fewer than two screens the entire three years that I've had this job.
And frankly, I'm stubborn. I just didn't wanna try it.
So, today turned out to be a big day for two reasons.
One, lots of coworkers came out for the food truck. I talked with more coworkers during that one lunch hour than I'd talked to in the past year. It was the most social I've been in a long time.
And two, I sat outside on the office patio with just my laptop, and I was able to be productive. It was a bit cumbersome, but it was doable.
So now that I've finally proved to myself that mobile possibilities exist, the door is open to work wherever I like whenever I like for as long as I like.
I'm slowly but finally figuring out how to break free from pre-pandemic mental structures that had been holding me back.
This is a big step forward and a big step to supporting my own mental health.
