When you live with a pet...
... anytime you step stocking-footed on something squishy (rolled up socks, stray pillow, Nerf dart), your heart will skip a beat, and you will recoil with terror thinking you've just stepped on your cat or dog.
And as you clutch your chest and try to regain control of your breathing, the cat or dog is curled up on the other side of the room giving you a look that says, "Keep it down! I'm trying to sleep over here!"

This is why I always wear shoes....if i step on a pet, they'll scream loud enough that I'll know it...
Actually my first thought is "Ewwwwww hairball" and then I'm relieved when it just turns out to be a toy or something.
I'm not worried about stepping in regurgitation so much as elimination.
Jake is a big dog, and his continence quotient is slipping in his old age.
There is something about that sensation as something on a carpet squishes between the toes....
