New Friends

There's nothing quite like looking up your child's new friend's parents on the state criminal website and finding the kid's dad has five arrests for drunken driving.

Do you know how many times you have to drive drunk to actually get caught? And FIVE times?

Why is this man still on the streets?

Does everyone look up new parents on the criminal website? Is that a normal safety check? (Coming from a non-parent.)

I agree...FIVE times is a little overboard.

Arwen: When you live with a news man, yes, it's a "normal" safety check. ;)

As a certified news junkie and a someday hopeful owner of a police scanner, I have to say I'm jealous!

Wow...I'm pretty sure if the Spouse Thingy drove drunk once, I'd do him physical harm. Twice and his ass would be out the door. Who sticks around for more than that...? And yeah, why the hell is someone allowed to drive with more than a couple Major Stupids on their record...?

I was arrested for driving drunk many years ago. I ended up spending 3 days in jail.

During that time, there were many different counseling sessions that we were required to attend. At one session, we had to listen to the stories of other "inmates" who had been in jail multiple times for drunk driving. One guy had been arrested 18 times!

Yes...Eighteen times!!! Oy!

I guess I should blog about that whole sequence of events some time. It was really crazy, and would likely be good blog material!

I'd like to do a credit/background check on everyone I meet. With the internet it is so much easier.

When my boys were little I didn't let them go anywhere, anytime, no exceptions (well, grandma) because of this.

Wow - that is really scary!

FIVE!?!? How is this nutbar not rotting in a jail cell?

I have a co-worker who just got busted for DUI #2. Instead of taking about how it was a dumb, irresponsible decision, he ranted about how his "constitutional rights" were violated because the officer had no cause to pull him over.

Maybe that kind of stupid mentality is why these losers have repeated violations.

I think in FL they pull your license after the 2nd time. I'm pretty sure.

HOWEVER, so I don't sound like I live in some self-rigteous state, the state of FL, WILL let you fail the vision test, and hand you back your keys to drive home, with a happy, 'If you can't pass it within 30 days we have to take your license...', whilst said person, who happens to be 83, totters away on his walker, shaking from Parkinson's, with an occassional stumble caused by neuropathy and the fact he is crippled.

Not that I know any of this from pesonal experience or anything. *cough*

I guess my next concern (back to parent who drives drunk) is... what else does he do drunk? I'd be hard pressed to have my kids over there alone. Gah! Scary stuff.

There is a parent at school who looks other parents up as well as coaches etc. She informed me of some parents who are 'swingers'. Found it on the 'net. I did a *blink*.

Bou made me come here! Honest.

Back when I was in college (none of you were born yet), there was a guy on my floor who had his license revoked for driving drunk, but cheerfully continued to drive and throw his empties in the back of his truck.

There is no telling with drunk drivers. That plus as their liver starts to go, the alcohol tends to stay in the body. That's why you hear stories of people pulled over with 6 times the legal limit and 2 to 3 times the blood alcohol level that will kill a normal person.
