I have noticed my children have begun doing more things for themselves since I started answering their requests for assistance with "I'll do my best," and "I'll try to remember."
Witness...

"If you're making french toast, I like mine when it's not soaking in egg and it's more soft than crunchy."

Moment of thought... "If you don't mind, I'll just make my own."

"There's a thing going on before classes tomorrow.  Can you wake me up fifteen minutes earlier?"
"I'll try to remember."
"You know what?  I'll just set my alarm."
