Best. Christmas Eve. Ever.

Originally written December 2009

Driving slowly up and down residential streets looking at Christmas lights as we do every Christmas Eve...
with The Husband and me in the front seat, the boys in the back...
All of us, at the top of our lungs, belting out "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with Bruce Springsteen on the radio.
Loud voices!
Reckless abandon!

Best. Christmas Eve. Ever.

Best for me...We were living 1,000 miles away from home and made it back with the boys (then only three of them) one Christmas almost 20 years ago.

They had lived rurally for a long time, and had almost forgotten what the city held at Christmas time. We drove around for hours looking at Christmas lights, singing almost every song that the "All Christmas Weekend" light contemporary radio station was playing.

Went out to the American Rose Society headquarters, and walked acres of trails filled with millions of lights, displays...and topped it off in the Visitor Center with three boys fascinated by an enormous electric train display that covered most of the lobby of the Center.

It was like heaven for them. Best. Christmas Eve. Ever.

Best was when Stubble was 2. We were travelling to the midwest to visit my family. Pretty much over Chicago, the pilot announced, "You're going to have a White Christmas people. But we'll get in before the storm and you'll be able to get where you're going before it hits."
By the time we reached my Mom's house 3 hours later the snow was falling. Stubble, being a SoCal boy had never seen it.
It was not only a magical Christmas Eve but a wonderful week where the dryer ran constantly to keep coats dry so that Stubble could practically live outside...
