Precious Cargo

Elder Son drove Younger Son to an appointment earlier this week.
For the first time.
Alone.

He didn't want to do it.  The Husband asked him to.
(FWIW: The Husband asked me first if it was okay with me.  We both agreed the boys would be trucking off together someday... a lot... and perhaps a short hop across town would be a good way to ease all four of us into that eventual reality.)

Before they left the house, The Husband pulled Elder Son aside and told him, "You realize you are responsible for the two most important people in your mother's and my life."
"I know," Elder Son replied.  "That's why I don't wanna go."

All is well.

Oh yes, I remember it well. Good break-in for Elder Son.

Sounds like he's got a sane view of driving. After he drives a little more, he will begin to realize that most everyone out there is a moron, and become even more defensive.

Good kid.

Reminds me of the "sacred duty" speeches we gave to Stubble before he drove a van load of kids to a neighboring high school for a Drama Club outing...

You and I are living the same life right now. My eldest drove my 2nd son for the first time two weeks ago. I was out of town. I was quietly freaking at the prospect. I said to him before, "Look, it's not that I love him more than you. I love you the same, but if you screw up or someone does something stupid, you're taking TWO of you out and I'm not sure I can handle it..."

He may be driving the two of them to school starting in January. We're going over the numbers and the fact I'd get an extra 10 hours a week of work in... and it's not sitting well with me. It just isn't. I'd rather spend those 10 hours in the car with them, I think, with me driving. I'm sure I'll get over it.

No, I've not let him drive with Bones. That's like letting crazy monkey energy out in the car with him. I don't have the coping skills for that yet.
