I never understood that bar across the boys' bicycles, either.

After watching Younger Son spend most of the past two weeks painfully trying to learn how to ride a unicycle, I wonder why more males than females ride them.

Unicycles aren't really "male friendly", if you know what I mean.

Roses, it is one of the great mysteries from my youth that I have never solved.

I think it has something to do with girls having to get on bicycles wearing a dress. Or something. But without revealing too much personal info, I can tell you from experience that the bar is an enemy.

I never tried to ride a unicycle. Stilts were challenge enough...

Ah I have to say that in my younger days when I rode.. a bicycle that is, a lady mounted and dismounted with modesty. I never managed to acquaint myself with the unicycle, I am far too uncoordinated for that.

It's structural -- boys tend to stress bicycle frames. But I'm with you in the impracticality of boys' bikes as training vehicles. Our uncoordinated child struggled mightily (and painfully) before mastering the darned contraption.
