Is this SO hard to understand?
When your clothes are dirty, put them in the laundry.
If your clothes are smelly, put them in the laundry.
If you want your clothes washed for any reason you can imagine, put them in the laundry.
On Saturday, I will collect your laundry and wash it, fold it, and give it back to you.
If you come to me at 9pm on Sunday night and tell me the pair of shorts you've been wearing all weekend (that you *could* have put in the laundry Saturday morning while you *could* have been wearing another pair of shorts) needs to be washed, neither one of us will be happy.
I can also pretty much guarantee that cleaning those shorts before school Monday morning will be much more urgent to you than it will be to me.

I solved this dilemma early on. The rule quickly became "If you wear it, you wash it; if you are tall enough to reach and understand the controls on the washer, your laundry is your responsibility."
This includes the spouse thingies, as well.
I haven't had to do laundry other than my own for a good 13 years. Sure, there was some resistance (but I NEEEEEEEEED you to wash it! I can't DOOOOOOOOO it! pleeeeeeeeeze???) and a few ruined things, but it was worth not having to do all that laundry over time.
So now your blog topics run the gamut from "Desperate Housewives" to disgusted housekeepers.
Maybe you need to get out more.
Thumper: I could do that; I really could. How do you deal with having a whole wash cycle going for just one item of clothing? Because I *know* that's what would happen here. A lot.

Assign each person a laundry day. If they can only wash their stuff once or twice a week, you tend to get full loads. And if you catch 'em washing tiny loads, you make 'em cough up cash for the wasted water an electricity ;)
LOL I dunno about that part...my kid's problem was always waiting until he had nothing left to wear. It took him a while to realize waiting meant chewing off a big chunk of time to get it all done.
